New online archaeology database for Hungary

As of the 28 May 2016, the Hungarian National Museum's Archaeology Database has been available online for researchers, field archaeologists, museum curators and members of the public...

The database was first introduced to archaeologists on the 4 May, 2016 at the Hungarian National Museum before the final testing and live launch. The database is part of the ARIADNE project and its development was supported by the 7th Framework Programme of the EU.

The database at present consists of 1,680 archaeological sites and more than 850,000 files ranging from site documentation through to scientific research reports. The content is continuously increasing as the Museum adds new sites and documentation.

You can access the database at: http://archeodatabase.hnm.hu/en.  All of the site functionality (including the search terms) is available in both Hungarian and English, which means that the database is easy to browse via keywords or the map interface.  No registration is required for to browse the database, but registered users may download - or upload - site documentation.

The site documentation is, of course, in Hungarian.  But the folder tree is available in English to help users to easily understand what kind of grey literature is available (eg. site assessment documentation, short summary of the excavation, archaeometry, finds inventory, etc). Here is an example of a site record showing how the documentation is structured: http://archeodatabase.hnm.hu/en/node/1617,

Joining the initiative

The Museum is encouraging Hungarian archaeologists and museums to join this initiative, and so has included functions to enable archaeological site documentation to be uploaded.  With the launch of its online catalogue the Museum would like encourage Hungarian colleagues and museums to become part of the ARIADNE community.
